In 2017’s Wonder Woman, audiences were introduced to the Amazons: Diana’s warrior sisters living on the mystical island of Themyscira. Now those very battle maidens are getting their own movie…but Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins won’t be at the helm.
In an interview with Total Film, Jenkins said, “I’m not going to direct it, hopefully. I’m going to try really hard not to. It’s not going to be easy. But Geoff Johns and I came up with the story, and we sold the pitch, and we’re going to get it going. I’ll produce it, for sure.”
This indicates that Jenkins is ready to take a back seat on this story and let someone else take the wheel, having already directed both the first Wonder Woman and its upcoming sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Wonder Woman was the character’s first standalone movie and saw great success, lauded by many critics as the best movie of the DC Extended Universe.
That’s not to say Jenkins is done with the DCEU. She is still planning to direct Wonder Woman 3 (whenever that will be), but is content to play a purely productive role in the spinoff. Jenkins says she does not plan on directing a new Wonder Woman project until the sequel is released…which she and Warner Bros. still aim to put out in theaters, rather than straight to digital like so many current productions.
