‘Parthenope’ Dominates The Italian Box Office

The Italian film Parthenope is gaining a lot of traction at the Italian box office. The film has officially surpassed the $5 million mark in its first two weeks, making it the country’s top commercial draw of the year. On Wednesday, November 6, Parthenope reached $5.5 million cumulatively from approximately 500 Italian screens. This is according to Cinetel, the national box office compiler.

Parthenope is writer and director Paolo Sorrentino’s tenth feature film. Its numbers are very impressive because Italy’s box office is still recovering from the pandemic. For reference, the hit film Challengers scored only $4.7 million in comparison to Parthenope’s $5.5 million.

One theory behind why the film has done so well is its marketing strategy. Italian distributor PiperFilm has focused their marketing on a target audience, youth audiences to be exact. Parthenope was also teased in cinemas during some midnight premieres in September, which only fueled the intrigue for the film’s release in October.

Parthenope’s cast includes Celeste Dalla Porta, Stefania Sandrelli, and Gary Oldman. It is Sorrentino’s love letter to Naples and a follow-up to his autobiographical film The Hand of God.

Parthenope has recently been acquired by A24, which plans to release the film to American audiences in the first part of 2025.
