Part 2 of ‘The Hobbit’ Gets an Epic Poster

It wouldn’t be that hard to forget, in the general scheme of things, that The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug is due out December 13, nearly a year to the day after the first installment of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy. Well, Jackson and co. seem intent on not letting us forget about it any more, as a new poster for the film has just been released in what could be the beginning of a very long publicity run-up to release. Check it out:

Pretty epic, though if the poster is drawn from a particular scene in the movie, it’s a little unclear what that scene would be. Speculation gets into very spoilery territory, though, so if you haven’t read the book go ahead and skip down to the next paragraph. If, on the other hand, you have read the book (and you should, it’s very good) and you want to engage in some good-natured opinion flipping, highlight the following to read: The clues here are sort of few and far between. Bilbo is clearly staring out at the gates to the Lonely Mountain, but the fact that he’s alone is a little bit puzzling. It could be this is when he’s sneaking off to spy on Smaug for the dwarves, but it seems an awfully long way for him to go alone. The glow in the entrance, combined with what looks like smoke, makes it likely that this image comes before Smaug is ousted, but what if it isn’t? Where does this film end? Could it go all the way to Bilbo being banished by Thorin? Our bets are that this shot is artificially constructed but does come right before Bilbo and the dwarves approach the Lonely Mountain. You tell us, though, does Bilbo look wistful or apprehensive?

The Hobbit: the Desolation of Smaug is directed by Peter Jackson and stars Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Luke Evans, and Benedict Cumberbatch. It is due in U.S. theaters December 13.
