Paramount Shelves R-Rated ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Project, Live Action Reboot In The Works

Paramount is looking for the new live-action installment of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to skew family friendly, much like the universe they’ve created with the Sonic franchise.  They’re currently in talks with Neal H. Moritz, who is the producer of Sonic The Hedgehog, to produce the film.  The R-rated, live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: The Last Ronin has been put on indefinite hold to pursue this new avenue.

The now shelved project would’ve adapted the post-apocalyptic story of the “Last Ronin” comic book, but the studio did air the thought of this becoming a reality some point down the line.  This is not the only turmoil within the franchise over the last few weeks, with Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being recently cancelled.  This is a spin-off show from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem animated film that hit theaters in 2023.  The second and final season of the animated series will be coming to Paramount+ on December 12 with 12 episodes.  Although the series was axed, a sequel to the animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem will be hitting theaters on September 17, 2027.  Seth Rogen is attached as a producer for both animated films, also writing the first installment.

Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were the co-creators of the TMNT black and white comic book series in 1984.  The duo also had a direct hand in the original live-action trilogy that spanned from 1990-1993, attached as writers for all 3 films.  The turtles returned to the big screen in CGI form in 2014 with another film titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the same name as the original live action picture.  Both installments of this name were huge successes, with the 1990 version bringing in $202 million on a $13 million budget, and the 2014 version bringing in $485 million on a budget between $125-150 million.  Paramount is hoping to channel this same success with this newly announced project, and they are hoping Moritz is the man for the job as his 2 produced Sonic films have generated a combined $725.2 million at the box office.

Stay tuned  for any future developing stories in the next adventure of Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo.
