Wizards of the Coast have teamed up with Paramount Pictures over the pandemic to bring to life one of, if not the most, iconic tabletop games ever. This morning in the grand Hall H of the San Diego Comic-Con, the production company announced Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
For years there have been talks among employees of Wizards of the Coast about a possible film on one of their many successful IPs. A decade ago the possibility of a ‘Magic the Gathering’ film was under serious consideration but the idea was abandoned and forgotten on a dark bookshelf. Fast forward to today and they have announced a new Dungeons & Dragons movie. Unlike its predecessor, Honor Among Thieves promises to be loyal to its source material and bring tons of humor. Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Rege-Jean Page, and Hugh Grant have been unveiled to be the new faces of the franchise. A star-studded cast to help the older viewers forget about the 2000 debacle with Jeremy Irons, Justin Whalin, and Marlon Wayans.
Producers and directors of the show have been working on the project for years trying to bring the best experience to fans of the D&D world. Filmed in Northern Ireland during the pandemic, the film will use a fusion of practical and visual effects that will help make the movie feel as real as possible. The trailer displays some of those special effects and stunning visuals but most importantly its hilarious humor. The trailer then reveals how the film is truly inspired by the game as we will see each actor in a different assigned role such as a bard, a barbarian, a paladin, a sorcerer, and more.
The panel at the San Diego Comic-Con allowed us to get a small and comical sneak preview on the film. Chris Pine and his crew of misfits are seeking a magical item that was lost during an ancient battle. The crew then goes grave digging to seek answers by bringing the dead back to life. The dead only stay awake long enough to answer five questions, even if the questions are rhetorical. In a hilarious sequence, the gang’s necromancer awakens corpse after corpse and puts them all back to sleep as none of them can provide a satisfactory answer. Fans of the game should get excited for a film that will most definitely provide tons of monsters, original lore, authentic characters, and above all, tons of humor.
