Continuing its festival run, which includes top prize wins from Venice, Berlin, and the Palme D’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord will be the opening film for the Indonesian film festival, Jakarta World Cinema. The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as conservative Romanian immigrants who end up at odds with the authorities and their local Norwegian community after local authorities accuse them of abusing their four children.
The festival will also include several of this year’s stalls from the festival circuit. These include the documentary Naza from filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, which won the Special Jury Prize at this year’s Venice Film Festival; May el-Toukhy’s Woman Unknown, which won the Golden Lion at Venice; and Ilker Çatak’s Yellow Letters, which won the Golden Bear at this year’s Berlinale Film Festival (the latter of which will be premiering as part of the festival’s online program). Other popular festival films include the Cannes Grand Prix winner Minatour, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev; the Cannes Best Actress winner, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden; and Jesse Eisenberg’s The Drama.
Coinciding with the announcement of the festival’s lineup, Shandy Gasella, the festival director for this year’s Jakarta World Cinema, made the following statement:
Securing 120 award-winning titles, but having the Golden Bear, the Palme d’Or, and the Golden Lion winners all in our lineup in a single year is a monumental milestone for us. For Indonesian cinephiles, this lineup is a rare and vital passport to experience the absolute heartbeat of contemporary world cinema.
The festival’s first run of screenings will be held from Oct. 31–Nov. 7 at CGV Grand Indonesia. Screenings will then continue from Nov. 14-21, some at CGV Paris Van Java in Bandung and others at Cinepolis Malang Town Square. There will also be an online selection made available for Indonesian viewers through the online service KlikFilm available from Oct. 31-November 21.
