Chilean director Pablo Larraín is going to direct a new biopic about famous Greek-American opera singer Maria Callas. The film is written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders creator) and will have actress Angelina Jolie playing the singer. This film will be the third one Larraín makes focusing on famous female figures, his previous films shot internationally have been biopics of Jackie Kennedy and Princess Diana.
Callas’ feature will be a re-imagination of the singer’s final days in Paris. This premise has similarities with Spencer also set in a specific timeframe in the director’s previous feature, penned by Knight too.
About the film Larraín stated – “Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift”-.
Jolie is also excited about working with Larraín, she declared that she has admired him for a long time and said – “To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven knight, is a dream”-.
The production companies involved in this project are Fabula Pictures, The Apartment Pictures and Komlizen Films. One of the producers is Juan de Dios Larraín, who is the director’s brother and has been producing his films since the beginning of his career.
