Oz Perkins’ Longlegs set a record last year as it became the highest-grossing release in Neon’s history, earning approximately $75 million at the domestic box office. Based on the early reaction from critics and audiences alike, it seems that Perkins’ is trying to make another splash at the box office with his new feature, The Monkey. This Stephen King adaptation of the short story that shares the aforementioned name is not estimated to make as much of a splash as Longlegs did in the opening weekend box office. The film, starring Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Adam Scott, centers around a pair of twins being terrorized throughout their lives by a supernatural murderous toy monkey.
While these films share the same CinemaScore grade, C+, they seem to differ in the other well-known critic website, Rotten Tomatoes. While Longlegs has an audience score of 61%, The Monkey is ahead by a hair with a score of 66%. The critic score appears to display the opposite but both were considered “certified fresh” with Longlegs having a score of 86% on the Tomatometer and The Monkey receiving a 77%. Including that, The Monkey is estimated to produce around $20 million in the domestic box office opening, only being made with a reported budget of approximately $10 million. The Monkey was released in theaters this Friday.
