New life is to be breathed into 1987’s Overboard in the form of a remake starring Anna Faris (The House Bunny) and Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included). Derbez is an actor whose popularity in Latin America has recently landed him a couple of leading roles alongside A-list celebrities like Salma Hayek (How to be a Latin Lover) in films produced in the U.S.
The original romantic comedy featured Goldie Hawn (Snatched) as an unpleasant affluent wife. Eventually she becomes afflicted with amnesia and is subsequently taken advantage of by her yacht’s carpenter, Kurt Russell (Deathproof). He essentially tricks her into a form of voluntary domestic slavery by claiming that she’s his wife. Once/If you’re able to get over the implications of that, the film really is enjoyable…we swear.
In this iteration Faris will be filling Russell’s shoes as the abductor, while Derbez is to portray the abductee. While the role reversal is somewhat intriguing, we’re not too jazzed at the prospect of yet another remake in Hollywood. If not just for the sake of originality in the industry, but for the sake of future filmmakers as well. What intricate and nuanced alterations will they have to come up with in order to have a fresh take on 2052’s remake of 2017’s remake of 1987’s Overboard? Comment below if you have some fresh ideas that they can look back on from Mars.
