After 2 years of virtual conventions and programming, the American Black Film Festival came in hot this year boasting several great films and an in-person event in Miami, Florida. The live events took place earlier this month with the films being exhibited from June 15th-19th; with the Emmy nominated actor Dondré Whitfield reading out the nominations. Films that took some of the top honors where the likes of Our Father, the Devil and Feel Like Ghosts.
Sony sponsored the $2,500 prize that is awarded alongside the Best Narrative Feature award which went to Our Father, The Devil — the story of an African immigrant living in a small French town when a charming Catholic priest comes to town, whom she recognizes as the man who helped slaughter her family in Africa. The film also won the Best First Film award for director Ellie Foumbi.
Best Director went to Kali Baker-Johnson for the film Feel Like Ghosts, which follows the story of 2 recent exes as they ponder what could have been and where things could have gone after their love fizzled out. The film also walked out with the Best Screenplay award.
However, one of the more coveted awards is still up for grabs, the Fan Favorite Award is to be announced on July 1st.
