The Monkey is a new horror film by Osgood Perkins, known for his previous horror hit, Longlegs. The Monkey is a Stephen King adaptation, and it has recently received positive scores on the website Rotten Tomatoes. Currently sitting at 86%, the film is pleasing fans of both King and Perkins.
One review, by Robert Kojder from Flickering Myth, reads:
“The Monkey is a bonkers black comedy with a black heart; it is more moving than it has any right to be, yet fittingly fueled by rapturously refreshing deaths that illustrate a depressing, unavailable reality of existence.”
The Monkey follows a pair of twin brothers who find an old monkey toy in the attic. However, this monkey has a more sinister purpose. As it beats its drum, mysterious deaths begin to occur, chaos ensues, and the brothers must figure out how to stop it for good.
While not everyone loves the monkey, claiming it is tedious or slow, most people do enjoy it, hence the Rotten Tomatoes score. You can see for yourself when The Monkey opens in theaters nationwide on February 21st. Until then, we recommend exploring Perkins’ previous film, Longlegs, which will give you a sense of how this director operates.
