Oscars Might Be Out Of Reach For Universal’s ‘Cats’

Universal’s Cats’ possible Oscar run might be in jeopardy since the film missed several key deadlines for the award season. The well-known musical created by Andrew Lloyd Webber will be adapted to the big screen with cast that includes Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Ian McKellan and others come December.

Cats released the first trailer back in July to mixed reviews, particularly involving the uncanny CGI effects used to create its cat-people. Although the film’s plot is a bit odd to say the least, what can’t be denied is its success on Broadway. One of the longest running shows in London’s West End and with multiple Tony awards to its name, the story revolves around a group of felines who decide each year which one of them will be granted afterlife in a place called Heaviside Layer.

Reported by The Playlist, Cats will not make it in time for any of the guilds to showcase their film. Towards the end of the year is when industries push for screenings to promote their Oscar contenders, something Universal looks to be missing out on. In addition to missing screenings for critics groups, Cats will have to push for a spot with the Academy and hustle before it’s too late.
