Oscars Announce Launch Date And Lineup For First FYC Digital Screeners

As announced by Variety on Thursday, the Oscars will launch the first of their FYC consideration digital screeners on Friday, August 12th. Each movie included in the lineup will be made available on the Academy Screening Room, a digital screener platform available to the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ membership of more than 11,000, so that they may consider each film for nomination across all categories, from Best Picture to specialty categories like Best Documentary Feature, Best Animated Feature, Best International Feature and the short film categories, at the 98th Academy Awards next year. After August 12th, new films will continue to be uploaded to the Academy Screening Room every following Friday until the season deadline for all categories.

One of the films included in the first lineup of digital screeners is Sony Pictures Animation’s KPop Demon Hunters. The original animated feature has been one of Netflix’s biggest successes since it launched on the platform in June. As of August 5th, it is currently Netflix’s most popular animated film and is #4 in Netflix’s ranking of all-time most popular films. The film’s soundtrack has also been an enormous success, with the original song “Golden”, included in the film, and as part of the soundtrack, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200 and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Golden” will be included in the first lineup of original songs for the music branch to consider for the Best Original Song category for the 98th Academy Awards.

Other films in this first lineup of digital screeners include the Led Zeppelin documentary, Becoming Led Zeppelin, the Cinderella body horror, The Ugly Stepsister, and The Luckiest Man in America, starring Paul Walter Hauser. Director Embeth Davidtz’s debut feature, the coming-of-age drama Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight, which is based on Alexandra Fuller’s memoir of the same name, and follows a young girl’s experiences growing up on a farm in Rhodesia (now known as Zimbabwe), is also included on the lineup.
