The Oscars took place on Sunday evening with some surprising snubs and wins. Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain against his former Succession co-star Jeremy Strong. While there was speculation that Timothée Chalamet would take home the Oscar for Best Actor for his role in A Complete Unknown, the award went to Adrien Brody for his performance in The Brutalist. Demi Moore was expected to take home her first Oscar for Best Actress for the film The Substance, but in an unexpected surprise, Mikey Madison instead took home her first Oscar for the leading role in Anora.
Surprising performances of the night included A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic that was nominated for eight Oscars; it did not win a single award. Nosferatu was also completely shut out after receiving a surprising four nominations. Other Oscar shutouts include two-time nominees The Apprentice and Nickel Boys as well as the three-time nominee Sing Sing.
Wicked had what could be considered a poor night, as the ten-time nominated film won only two awards: Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Conclave and The Substance both had similar outcomes, with the former only taking home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the latter winning the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
Sean Baker’s Anora had the best showing of the night, sweeping categories including Best Actress, Best Film Editing, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture. While Jacques Audiard Emilia Pérez received a leading thirteen nominations, the controversial film only received two Oscars: Zoe Saldaña’s win for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Song for “El Mal.”
I’m Still Here brought home one win with Best International Feature Film against Emilia Pérez. Best Documentary Feature went to Yuval Abraham and Basel Adra for their film No Other Land. Indie animated Flow won Best Animated Feature, winning over the critically acclaimed The Wild Robot and Disney’s Inside Out 2.
