Fresh off his Oscar for The Great Beauty, director Paulo Sorrentino is about to begin shooting his seventh feature length film, In The Future. Starring Michael Caine, shooting will take place in Italy this May. Unlike his other Italian pictures, The Great Beauty and Il divo: La spettacolare vita di Giulio Andreotti (2008), this film will be in English; however, this is not Sorrentino’s first time directing an English-language film, nor his first time with a Hollywood A-lister. Sean Penn starred in his most recent English-speaking film, This Must Be The Place. The 2011 movie follows a retired rock star as he journeys from Dublin to New York to seek revenge against a man who humiliated his father. Unfortunately, most of the plot details of In The Future are currently withheld.
What we do know suggests that the film will center on a friendship between two elderly people. According to Variety, Sorrentino told Italian daily La Repubblica that he wants to make “a fresh start” with a “small, intimate film.”
Although the stakes are high for Sorrentino to continue molding quality cinema, Sorrentino’s script has potential to be magnificently conveyed. The now 80-year-old Caine is a two time Oscar winner (Hannah and her Sisters, Cider House Rules), and his advancing years do not seem to have slowed down his career; he is on board for several projects. In addition to In The Future, he will soon appear in George C. Wolfe’s Harry and the Butler. He is also rumored to be acting in Matthew Vaughn’s The Secret Service (currently filming), and will appear in Brad Anderson’s Eliza Graves and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (both of which are in post-production). Needless to say, we are excited to see more of Caine.
Sorrentino won Italy’s eleventh foreign Oscar with The Great Beauty. Italy has won the most foreign Oscar Awards, although the last one before The Great Beauty was Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful (1999). Following The Great Beauty (known in Italy as La Grande Bellezza), Sorrentino’s In The Future will hopefully be an excellent showcase for Caine’s talent. The film (currently in pre-production) is produced by Indigo and is scheduled to begin filming in May.
