Oscar-winning filmmaker Matthew A. Cherry has been set to direct The Come Up, a new comedy for New Line. This is Cherry’s latest feature film made in collaboration with Warner Bros.
Emmy-nominated writer Michael Starrbury wrote the script for the film. Starrbury previously wrote the script for Netflix’s When They See Us, which premiered last year.
Of the project, Starrbury remarked, “I’ve known Matthew for years and have proudly watched him develop into one of the most promising filmmakers working today. Just as importantly, he’s a great guy who fits in with the amazing chemistry we’ve developed with the team and New Line. I couldn’t be more excited to embark on this journey with all of them.”
While the specifics of the plot are being kept under wraps, it has been described as a comic version of Oceans 11.
Lil Rel Howery (Get Out), Keith Lucas, and Kenneth Lucas (22 Jump Street) are attached to the comedy.
Cherry first made a name for himself with his Oscar-winning film Hair Love, an animated short. Hair Love was funded primarily through Kickstarter and successfully raised $280,000 for the film. The film was later adapted into a children’s book and became a New York Times bestseller.
