Oscar-Winner Mark Rylance Joins Cast of ‘Waiting for the Barbarians’

According to an exclusive by The Hollywood Reporter, Academy-Award winning actor Mark Rylance has officially joined the cast of the feature-film adaption of J.M. Coetzee’s 1980 novel Waiting for the Barbarians.

The film, directed by Circo Guerra, is set to begin filming this fall with principal photography in both Europe and North America.

The story centers around a magistrate (Rylance). He is a loyal servant of the “Empire,” and he is stationed in a small frontier town. In his position, he does his best to ignore the impending war of what are called “Barbarians.” After he sees the mistreatment of war prisoners, though, he turns away from the Empire and “carries out a quixotic form of rebellion.”

Waiting for the Barbarians is financed and produced by TaTaTu, a newly blockchain-based social entertainment platform by Andrea Iervolino.

Iervolino stated the following about Rylance joining the project: “There is no one better suited or better equipped than Mark Rylance for a role as complex as that of the magistrate in Waiting for the Barbarians… The story is his to own and bring to life in a way that only he can.”

Rylance can be seen in recent works including Ready Player One, Dunkirk, and Bridge of Spies.

Along with TaTaTu, Monkia Bacardi’s AMBI Media Group, Michael Fitzgerald, and Olga Segura will also produce.
