Oscar’s Best-picture nominee and awards-darling Poor Things has been made available to stream on Hulu before Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony. The film has received awards buzz for its unique style and performances.
The film’s synopsis, as posted by Variety, reads, “From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”
The film is nominated at the Academy Awards for Best Picture, Lead Actress (for Stone), Best Director (for Lantimos), Best Supporting Actor (for Ruffalo) and Best Adapted Screenplay (for writer Tony McNamara). The film has also been nominated for Best Original Score, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Costume Design, and Best Film Editing.
Stone is one of the frontrunners for the Best Actress category alongside Lily Gladstone for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. The film has already won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy as well as Best Motion Picture–Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes.
