The spring hit Olympus Has Fallen starred Gerard Butler as a former White House guard who is called back into duty after a terrorist attack plagues 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. The Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) directed surprise sleeper awoke the doldrums of a slow spring movie season, likely derailed the chances of the similarly-themed Roland Emmerich film White House Down from becoming a mega hit, and now appears in the early stages of getting a sequel.
The new film set to called London Has Fallen will involve a strike set on the city of London during the funeral proceedings of the British Prime Minister, a plot of which only Butler’s grizzled personal guard Mike Banning and returning Aaron Eckhart as President Asher can solve with the aid of British MI6 agent, a role of which that hasn’t been cast yet. Returning cast members are set to include Morgan Freeman, Angela Bassett and Radha Mitchell. Currently no director is set to helm the sequel as Fuqua is busy at work on the film adaptation of television thriller The Equalizer starring Denzel Washington and Melissa Leo.
London Has Fallen is set to begin production in May of next year and we will provide more information as it comes along. Suffice it to say, no reaction has been publicly made from the White House Down crew whose franchise hopes faded as it played second fiddle.
