The 32nd Oldenburg Film Festival will feature The Chronology of Water, Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, as its closing film. The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last May.
The Chronology of Water stars Imogen Poot as a competitive swimmer who uses sex and substance abuse to deal with trauma from sexual abuse. Lidia eventually finds meaning through writing, following a university class with Ken Kesey.
The film is adapted from Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir. Stewart presents Yuknavitch’s story through non-chronological, intimate scenes that capture how trauma can fragment memories.
“We are excited to give her bold and auspicious directorial debut a special platform, as I believe Kristen has proven to be a new and visionary voice in cinema,” Oldenburg festival director Torsten Neumann told The Hollywood Reporter.
Oldenburg, which has a reputation for maintaining an eccentric aspect independent of corporate interests, has launched films such as Torsten Reuther’s Uppercut and Jan Ole Gerster’s A Coffee In Berlin to mainstream success. Other films this year’s festival will feature include Yun Xie’s Under the Burning Sun (odyssey for bodily autonomy), Brandon Daley’s $Positions (midwest crypto investment disaster), and Stewart Buck’s Uncovering Wolfen (documentary on the making of the 1981 horror film).
