One of the 1990s’ most beloved comedies is getting a remake, as popular music video director Calmatic is slated to direct his vision of House Party, according to Deadline.
Following the MTV Video Music Awards, where the music video director won an accolade for his humorous take on Lil’ Nas X’s remix of “Old Town Road” starring Billy Cyrus, Calmatic will be assigned the task of filming House Party. His directorial debut will be a reimagining of the 1990 hip-hop comedy directed by Reginald Hudlin, starring the tongue-in-cheek rap duo Kid ‘N Play: Christopher “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin.
House Party tells the story of an eponymous house party that would be a game changer entrenched with 1990s hip-hop fashion and lingo. The film featured the comedic talents of Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell-Martin before they became stars of the successful FOX sitcom Martin. The film proved to be a box office and critical smash, spawning two sequels House Party 2 less than a year later in 1991 and House Party 3 in 1994. Following the original trilogy, this franchise detoured into direct-to-video territory with two sequels: 2001’s House Party 4: Down to the Last Minute 2012’s and House Party: Tonight’s the Night, which saw the duo return after 18 years.
House Party‘s script will be compiled by Stephen Glover and Jamal Olori of Atlanta fame. LeBron James and Maverick Carter of SpringHill will produce.
