Co-written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the vampire mockumentary, What We Do in the Shadows has released a trailer. The comedy premiered at Sundance and centers on a trio of vampire housemates in Wellington, New Zealand. In addition to Sundance, it was part of the official selection at the Berlin and SXSW film festivals.
What We Do in the Shadows stars co-writers and directors, Clement (Flight of the Conchords) as an 862 year-old vampire, Vladislav and Waititi (Boy) as a 379 year-old Viago. Waititi is additionally known for directing and writing the Oscar-winning short, Two Cars, One Night (2004). The last vampire of the trio of flatmates is Jonathan Brugh (How to Meet Girls from a Distance) as an 183 year-old vampire, Deacon.
The trailer shows us how difficult it is for vampires to interact with humans. For example, the vampire’s addiction to human blood hinders their capacity to be accepted by humans. It also doesn’t help that when the vampires go to a club, the bouncers have to invite them in.
What we do in the Shadows will hit theatres in New Zealand on June 12. We’re still thirsty for a U.S. release date.
