As today marks the beginning of the limited release Oscar-qualifying run for the Mike Binder (Reign Over Me) drama Black or White, Relativity Media has finally debuted the film’s official trailer. Kevin Costner (3 Days to Kill) produces and stars as a recent widower and guardian to his bi-racial granddaughter. He is forced to face the pressures of race and compassion while entering a custody battle with the young girl’s paternal grandmother (Octavia Spencer, The Help).
The film also stars Gillian Jacobs (TV’s Community), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), and Jennifer Ehle (The Ides of March), and will premiere to worldwide audiences on January 30, 2015.
Oscar-winner Costner is relatively familiar with the family drama niche, with one of his most notable films being a previous collaboration with director Binder – The Upside of Anger (2005). This latest partnership has yet to garner as much critical acclamation since its premiere at TIFF this year, but it undoubtedly has a lot going for it. As far as the trailer goes, Costner and Spencer (also a fellow Oscar-winner) seem to have developed a natural chemistry onscreen in a film sure to draw a wide audience with its hot-button premise.
We will next see Costner in Summit’s thriller Criminal, and Spencer as Johanna in Insurgent, the second installment of the Divergent YA trilogy.
