Blue Sky Studios, best know for their hit Ice Age series, have not released an animated movie since 2017’s Ferndinand. This year, however, they have a new film featuring Will Smith and Tom Holland called Spies in Disguise. The movie was initially set for a September 2019 release but got delayed to December due to the Disney-Fox Acquisition earlier this year. Now the upcoming animated feature just released a new trailer showcasing more of its story.
The trailer starts by introducing whom many consider the greatest spy in the world: Lance Sterling, played by Will Smith. We see Sterling pulling off some slick moves and cool spy tricks in a big montage, leading to his team congratulating him for a mission accomplished. He then runs into a young scientist named Walter Beckett (Tom Holland), who tells Sterling about a new experiment he has been working on that could make a spy “disappear.” Sterling ends up accidentally drinking Beckett’s formula and learning its side effect- he gets turned into a pigeon, which understandably makes the spy frustrated with Beckett. The trailer ends with Beckett getting excited at all the cool spy potential Sterling will have but Sterling, still angry, wants the scientist to “Un-Bird” him right now.
The trailer showcases a few neat gags and even some visually unique action set pieces. The film does a distinct look compared to Blue Sky’s other works, though some may feel that turning Sterling into a pigeon might be a bit over the top and disconnected from the spy-centric trailer footage. Regardless, it’ll be neat to see what Blue Sky Studios can offer with this new upcoming feature film, especially being under new management by Disney.
Spies in Disguise is set for release on December 25th 2019. Watch the Full Trailer Below.
