Marty Supreme star Odessa A’zion has dropped out of Sean Durkin’s adaptation of Deep Cuts from A24.
The actress revealed she was exiting the project via her Instagram stories, claiming the reason was that the role is meant for someone else. She stated, “Guys! I am with all of you and I am not doing this movie. Lemme make myself clear.” This reaction came shortly following online outrage after the casting announcement on Monday. A’zion was set to play Zoe Gutierrez, who is of Mexican heritage. Odessa A’zion is an American actress with Jewish and English heritage, which sparked controversy online as to whether she should play the character.
In another Instagram story, A’zion clarified what happened, claiming,
I’m so sorry that this happened. I went in for Percy, but was offered Zoe instead and instantly said yes! I’m so pissed y’all, I hadn’t read the book and should have paid attention to all aspects of Zoe before accepting…and now that I know what I know? Fuck that. I’m out!
Percy Marks is the main character in the novel, but the role was given to Cailee Spaeny (Civil War, Alien: Romulus). A’zion continued saying,
I’d never take a role from someone else that’s meant to do it. That SHOULD do it! That’s not me. There are a plentitude of people more than capable of playing this role and I am not one of them. I can’t wait to see who it ends up being.
Odessa A’zion seemingly came out of nowhere in 2025, being thrust into the spotlight with a multitude of projects. She appeared in Until Dawn, She Rides Shotgun, I Love LA, and of course, Marty Supreme, for which she was nominated for a BAFTA award.
