With or without decorations, it’s been a horrifying time for the box office, with a month-long run for October clocking in at one of the lowest in nearly 30 years.
October did have a few wins with its new releases, especially in the shape of Black Phone 2. The film was able to take in $51 million domestically, per BoxOfficeMojo, with an opening of $27 million. That is an improvement, if ever so slight, over the $23 million debut of its predecessor. Other films, like Chainsaw Man: The Movie- Reze Arc ($23 million domestically) and Taylor Swift: ($34 million) also stand out as the heavy hitters for the month of October.
Although October had a limited number of big hits, a good chunk of the releases this month didn’t land exactly how they were expected to. Chief among them is Tron: Ares, which was intended to be one of Disney’s several big tentpoles of 2025. Hollywood Reporter noted that the film was unable to hit even $100 million stateside, and a previous piece from our site indicated that it’s on track to lose money.
Hollywood Reporter also noted the overall cume for the month looks like it’s going to end up just around $425 million. Barring 2020, which took a hit thanks to COVID-19, 2025 has the lowest performing October since 1997. 2025’s October is still faring better, though, as 1997’s was just $385.2 million.
