The trailer for Novitiate has been released, offering look at the life of a religious young woman who becomes a nun played by Margaret Qualley (The Nice Guys). Qualley’s character, Sister Cathleen, must reconcile with the realities of her life and personal character, along with the fluctuating religious climate around the mid-twentieth century. Furthermore, her difficulties continue on a personal level, as one of her superiors causes Qualley’s character plenty of internal conflict. Played by Melissa Leo (The Fighter), this superior is known as the Reverend Mother, a complicated figure resisting reform in the church.
Additionally, for those unfamiliar with the meaning of the title, it refers to someone who is beginning their involvement in a religious institution, which would make sense considering that Qualley’s character is just getting her start as a nun, making the decision to join the church at the age of seventeen.
Qualley acts alongside Dianna Agron (Glee), Liana Liberato (If I Stay), Morgan Saylor (Homeland), Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man), Denis O’Hare (Dallas Buyers Club), Julianne Nicholson (August: Osage County), and Eline Powell (For Elsie).
The Sony-owned film was directed and written by Margaret Betts. The trailer for the movie can be viewed below.
Novitiate will be released in only a few months! It will reach theaters on October 27 of this year.
