Nobody 2 hit theaters this past weekend, and the film leaves the door wide open for any and all sequels that may follow. In an interview with the film’s director, Timo Tjahjanto, he stated that he has multiple ideas for where they could take Hutch Mansell and his family next.
He stated, “I said to Bob [Odenkirk], “We can go both ways. We can have the family become even more involved in your action, or we can go completely Breaking Bad.” I was saying, “Bob, think about this. Open in a desert, and there’s a trailer park, where Hutch Mansell sits there by himself, fully bearded, holding a shotgun. His wife and his kids have left him, and now he’s alone.” He was like, Well, that’s really dark. And it really is! So, we can have it be that, this time, Becca needs to find Hutch as he’s missing somewhere. I see a lot of possibilities. I think the cool thing with Hutch is, again, wherever we push the action, we could always easily bring the family. We could always make a meal out of Brady, who seems to be growing up into somebody as well. The world is our oyster when it comes to the Mansell family.”
Regardless of the direction a sequel might take, Tjahjanto seems to be adamant about Hutch’s family continuing to play a part. In another interview, Tjahjanto was asked about how Nobody and Hutch Mansell differentiate themselves from the likes of John Wick, the series this was inspired by. He said, “Essentially, this is a film about a man who thinks he’s a lone wolf; a man who thinks he can function completely outside the norm of having family, without realizing that it’s actually his family that supports him the most.” And I think that speaks true, especially for the idea that, all this time, Hutch is actually thinking, “I’ve got to support my family. I’ve got to bring them to this holiday.” But ironically, in the end, his family saved him. And I always love that.” Hutch’s family is a constant in his life that just does not exist for John Wick, so it is important to keep that aspect in these films.
Nobody 2 currently has a respectable 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is unclear whether a sequel will be greenlit or not, but if you want to see more of Hutch Mansell, be sure to check out Nobody 2 before it leaves theaters.
