Noah Centineo, an actor known for his work on Netflix films like Sierra Burgess Is a Loser, The Perfect Date, and To All the Boy I’ve Loved Before, was recently interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter during the premiere of A24’s new film, Warfare, in which Centineo stars alongside D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Michael Gandolfini, Joseph Quinn and Charles Melton. The film is directed by Civil War director Alex Garland and co-directed by Ray Mendoza, whose experiences in the Iraq War inspired the film.
During the film’s production Centineo gained a close relationship with his fellow actors, who all play Navy Seals who all become trapped after a surveillance mission goes wrong in insurgent territory in Ramadi, Iraq. “We’ve all gotten quite close” says Centineo. In fact, many of the actors got so close, that they shaved each other’s head in preparation for the three weeklong boot camp done during preproduction, and most of the cast got matching “Call on me” tattoos inspired by the film’s opening scene.
When asked what attributed to the closeness between his co-stars, Centineo took a moment before answering “Difficult to explain”, he then answered, saying: “I think Alex Garland, Raymond Mendoza really curated a group of guys that they knew would care and would recognize what’s important with the story and commit to it, and they did. It’s really because of them. They put all of us together, we all got along and it was phenomenal experience.”
Centineo also went on to explain that he and actors still keep in touch, even after production of the film wrapped. “We all have a group chat” says Centineo, after going on to describe his relationship with his co-stars as “powerful” and “profound”. Centineo describes this relationship further, saying “We’ve all engaged and been talking since we started the film, which was when we started boot camp all the way until now. We continue to catch up with each other. Whenever there’s more than one of us in a city, we’re usually hanging out,”
Warfare will be released in theaters nationwide on April 11th.
