Fresh off of a buzzed-about showing at the Toronto International Film Festival, it appears that Noah Baumbach’s new movie While We’re Young is close to formally securing a distribution deal for theatrical release in the U.S. As reported first by Deadline, indie distributor A24 is nearing a deal that would allow it to release the relationship dramedy into theaters, presumably as early as this fall.
The movie screened this past Saturday night in Toronto to an overwhelmingly positive response, sparking a bidding war between distributors. Now it appears that A24 – the distributor behind other indie movies like Spring Breakers, Under the Skin, Obvious Child, and Kevin Smith’s next movie, Tusk – is close to winning that war and closing the deal. The movie is about man and woman who are forced to re-examine their relationship when a young couple comes into their lives. It stars Ben Stiller (who previously starred in Baumbach’s acerbic Greenberg), Naomi Watts (The Impossible), Amanda Seyfried (A Million Ways to Die in the West), Adam Driver (Baumbach’s Frances Ha), Maria Dizzia (Netflix’s Orange is the New Black), and Adam Horovitz, a.k.a Ad-Rock from The Beastie Boys.
While We’re Young is said to be the most commercial movie to date for Baumbach, who is coming off the critically praised but still relatively little-seen Frances Ha. That movie marked a resurgence of sorts for Baumbach, whose previous efforts – Greenberg and Margot at the Wedding – proved too caustic even for most critics, let alone audiences. Baumbach had previously received heaps of praise for his semi-autobiographical film The Squid and the Whale.
Once A24’s deal for While We’re Young officially closes, we should hear about a release date shortly thereafter.
