When it comes to The Strangers trilogy, it seems the third time is not the charm. Similar to the first and second installments, this third round is plagued with dismal reviews. The film currently holds a 16% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 51% audience score landing it in the rotten category on both sides.
The trilogy follows Madelaine Petsch’s, Maya, as she’s continually stalked and tormented by three masked assailants. This trilogy is not connected to 2008’s The Strangers or 2018’s The Strangers: Prey at Night. The Strangers: Chapter 2, the second entry to the current trilogy, presently holds the lowest Rotten Tomatoes critics score at 14%, with the third entry beating it by only 2%. The original films shared a similar premise. The 2008 first movie featured Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler as the tormented couple of the three masked intruders, and Christina Hendricks and Lewis Pullman took on the tormented roles in The Strangers: Prey at Night.
The culmination of negative reviews for all three films does not bode well for the trilogy. Chapter 1 grossed $48.2 million on an $8.5 million budget. Chapter 2 shared the same budget and grossed only $21.9 million. Chapter 3 is projected to earn $15 million with a budget of roughly $9-$10 million.
Though the films still made a profit, with the negative reception of critics and audiences, it’s unlikely The Strangers will be returning to theaters any time soon.
