Lionsgate is entering final negotiations to acquire a Nicolas Cage film titled The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, which will be scribed by Tom Gormican (Ghosted) and Kevin Etten (Workaholics), according to Deadline. If Lionsgate lands the film, it will serve as a meta project for Cage, who will be playing loose version of himself.
The film follows a fictionalized version of Nicolas Cage who, in a fit of financial and creative desperation, takes a $1 million invitation to attend the birthday of a Mexican billionaire who just so happens to be a diehard Cage fan. The story turns bizarre as Cage resorts to playing characters from his treasured and over the top film catalog in an attempt to remove himself from the danger that threatens his life. Kevin Turen will serve as the film’s producer alongside Cage and Mike Nilon through their Saturn Films banner.
Cage has been experiencing a return to form as of recently with the Oscar-winning actor making a cult splash in the 2018 revenge film Mandy, this month’s action-thriller Primal and his scene-stealing role as Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He’s currently set to star in Wally’s Wonderland as a janitor who must endure an evening in a corrupted amusement park. Cage will also appear in Grand Isle next year.
