Nicolas Cage and director John Woo are set to reunite several decades after their last project together in a biopic about notorious mafia kingpin Carlo Gambino, Deadline reports.
First working together on 1997’s sci-fi action thriller Face/Off with John Travolta, Cage and Woo would then collaborate on the World War II drama Windtalkers. Now the pair are set to reunite over twenty years later for the indie crime biopic.
Gambino will follow Pulitzer-winning journalist Jimmy Breslin as he investigates the life and secrets of the titular mob boss after the latter died in the 1970s. Cage will play the titular character, who was the notorious leader and namesake of the Gambino crime family in New York, for over 50 years.
George Gallo, who wrote for the Bad Boys franchise, and Nick Vallelonga, who won the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Green Book, will pen the screenplay. The project was recently launched at the American Film Market with WME Independent handling sales. Cassian Elwes and Edward Zeng of NextG Films, Robert Daly Jr., and David Lipper of Latigo Films, and Cage, Gallo, and Vallelonga will produce, while NextG Films will also handle the financing.
In a statement, Zeng discussed NextG Films’s plans for Gambino and their slate of independent films going forward:
“…Our vision is to unite the finest creative talents of Hollywood with the bold entrepreneurial spirit of Silicon Valley. Together, we aim to deliver an epic cinematic experience that brings audiences back to the theater again and again—an experience that not only entertains, but inspires people to reflect on the world we live in today…Through powerful storytelling and innovative artistry, we hope to remind everyone that the future is ours to shape, and it is our shared responsibility to make it better.”
Production and release date details about Gambino have yet to be announced as of this writing.
