A24 released its first trailer of the upcoming surreal comedy Dream Scenario after its buzz-worthy premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Starring Nicolas Cage, Dream Scenario marks Norwegian writer-director Kristoffer Borgli’s English language debut.
The film follows the hapless Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) as he suddenly becomes the center of international attention when he suddenly appears in others’ dreams. Slightly put off at first, he embraces this new fame and becomes a celebrity. Unfortunately, his appearances soon start taking on a nightmarish appearance, forcing him into the darker side of stardom.
In addition to Cage, Julianne Andrews, Michael Cera, and Tim Meadows make up the film’s cast of diverse characters. Well-renowned A24 director Ari Aster (Midsommar, Beau is Afraid) produced the film along with Lars Knudsen and Cage himself.
Dream Scenario garnered massive attention at its TIFF premiere, drawing plenty of acclaim from attending critics. Deadline chief film critic Pete Hammond even compared it to Woody Allen’s work, calling it “the most ingenious screen idea Woody Allen never had.” According to Hammond, comedy in Hollywood is a dying art, and he was pleasantly surprised to find a new movie that stretched ”a one-joke premise into a 101-minute film without letting the soufflé go flat — no easy task.”
The film will be released to wider audiences on November 10th.
