A trailer has released for The Carpenter’s Son, a film produced by Magnolia Pictures and starring Nicolas Cage, FKA Twigs, and Noah Jupe. Drawing inspiration from the historical object, the Gospel of Thomas, The Carpenter’s Son offers a horror film genre twist on the familiar story of Jesus, with Nicolas Cage as the patriarch Joseph. The film’s premise describes supernatural horror and threats that come to the family as the son becomes aware of his divine heritage, drawing similarities to a recent Biblical-themed supernatural horror project, Darren Aronofsky’s Mother!, albeit that dealt with the tales of Genesis and the conceptual idea of communion turned into body horror, as opposed to the narrative focus of this project.
The Carpenter’s Son is directed by British-American filmmaker Lofty Nathan, the director of films such as Harka, a drama about the incendiary events that led to the Arab Spring, and 12 O’Clock Boys. FKA Twigs and Noah Jupe have previously starred together in the drama film Honey Boy. Having already shared some scenes on that film, it bodes well for their creative chemistry here, where they will be playing mother and child, a notable relationship dynamic in the horror genre (see also Hereditary in recent years).
The film will feature international scenery, with much of the filming having occurred in Greece, where Cage humorously faced an accident with wild bees in a cave during his time filming there. While that will undoubtedly remind people of Cage’s prior folk horror experience in the similarly bee-stings-themed remake of The Wicker Man, it should be a treasure to see how an actor of Cage’s caliber and skillset operates in the style of horror filmmaking in the 2020s.
