Nicolas Cage has been cast to play Dracula in Universal’s latest film, Renfield, which is centered on Dracula’s henchman, Renfield played by Nicholas Hoult. Director Chris McKay is set to direct the film, and Ryan Ridley wrote the screenplay.
The original Dracula novel features R.M. Renfield as an inmate at an insane asylum who believed he suffered from delusions but actually is Dracula’s servant. Plot details are yet to be relieved, but allegedly the film will take place in the present day, as it is not a period piece.
Best known for The Rock and National Treasure, Cage has acquired some of the best reviews of his career with 2021’s Pig, which focuses on a truffle hunter whose beloved pet is stolen.
Samantha Nisenboim will join the project as an executive produce, and the film will be produced by Skybound Entertainment’s team, including David Alpert, Bryan Furst, Sean Furst, and Kirkman.
Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management, and attorney Patrick Knapp at GGSSC. Hoult is represented by UTA, 42 and Felker Toczek Suddleson Abramson LLP; McKay is represented by UTA, Rise Management and Morris Yorn Barnes Levine Krintzman Rubenstein Kohner Endlich & Gellman.
There is no set production date as of yet for Renfield.
