Briarcliff Entertainment has released the trailer for Sovereign, a crime thriller inspired by true events. The film stars Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation), Jacob Tremblay (Doctor Sleep, Luca), and Dennis Quaid (The Parent Trap, The Substance).
The film follows Jerry (Offerman) and Joseph (Tremblay) Kane, a father-son duo who follow the Sovereign Citizen belief system, people who have strong distrust towards government authority and policies. In the trailer, we see Jerry training his son to shoot to kill and encouraging him to use “independent thinking.” As their ideology leads them to become increasingly violent towards the law, they find themselves in the crosshairs of Police Chief Jim Bouchart (Quaid). Tensions turn violent as Bouchart must use any means necessary to put a stop to the carnage.
The film is directed by Christian Swegal and distributed by Briarcliff Entertainment. Briarcliff has released a handful of other films this year, including Juliet & Romeo, Sneaks, and the Jonathan Majors-led Magazine Dreams. They also distributed the Oscar-nominated film The Apprentice last year. Sovereign will be released in select theaters as well as on digital on July 11. It is an unorthodox release strategy, but it allows viewers to choose between the theatrical experience and buying the film at home, as it will be available to buy or rent.
