The upcoming Maleficent sequel just released its trailer today, marking the next big installment in Disney’s live-action remake department. The film was announced earlier this year with an October release date, following Dumbo and The Lion King. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will follow up 2014 film that kickstarted this trend of live-action Disney remakes.
It starts with Prince Philip proposing to Princess Aurora to be her Queen. Maleficent finds out about this proposal, however, and warns Aurora that how love doesn’t always end well. They end up visiting the Prince’s kingdom, whose Queen explains to Maleficent that, while she did a good job raising Aurora, she will be better off with their family and have the love of a “Real Mother.” Maleficent gets angry at this and calls off the wedding, leading to what looks like a war between Maleficent and the Kingdom. It’s a big montage of action set pieces, ending with Maleficent falling into the water. She is shortly saved by another creature of her same species, who insists that it’s time she cares for her own.
The trailer showcases a lot more action and visual effects than the first movie offered. Some are still critical of Maleficent getting a sequel, giving its more action-oriented direction. It might not be as big a hit as Disney would like, considering how the last time they did a sequel to a live-action adaptations, it was Alice Through the Looking Glass, which under performed big time. Regardless, Disney is taking the risk and, given the October release date for a villain feature, this might the remake brand some success. If anything else, we’ll get more of an idea of Maleficent’s origins with the hint at the end of this trailer.
Maleficent Mistress of Evil will release on October 18th 2019. Watch the full trailer below:
