A trailer for the first part in a four-part series, Horizon: An American Saga, has been released. The series stars prolific actor Kevin Costner.
It is reported that the new series of films, which are written and directed by Costner, take place in an America on the brink of the Civil War. It follows a group of people trying to settle in the southern parts of the US, however, their settling creates conflicts with the Natives. Costner penned the script for the first two parts, alongside Jon Baird.
With an expansive career under his belt, Costner is currently best known for his work on Yellowstone, Paramount’s popular western TV series. He went out of his way to ensure that this new series would get off the ground, even going as far as to help fund it by taking out a loan on his house. Costner is no stranger to Civil War films, either, thanks to his starring role in 1990’s Dances With Wolves.
As The Hollywood Reporter states, Costner got the idea to make it a four-film series when no studio would pick up the story as a single film. Costner justified the project, stating, “So I don’t know what’s wrong with me. But I wanted it to step away from what we usually see in Westerns where there’s a town that’s already there. No one knows how [the town] came to be. There’s a guy comes in off the horizon, if you will. We don’t know much about him, except that he has some skills he’d like to put behind him and this town ends up needing those stills desperately … Too often, it’s just a convenience for the hero guy to knock down a dumb guy.”
Audiences can expect the first installment of Horizon: An American Saga to hit theaters on June 28th of this year, with the second part slated for August 16th. Parts three and four have not been filmed as of yet, and do not have a release date.
