Following the crossover successor of Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021, the atomic lizard and gigantic gorilla are back in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The film plans to follow up on the ending of the previous feature, which had Godzilla and Kong team up against Mecha Godzilla in a climactic battle.
Godzilla and Kong will take on a new kaiju threat, Skar King, another towering simian kaiju like Kong. The film’s official synopsis, as posted by ComicBook.com, promises to “delve further into the histories of these Titans, their origins and the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond, while uncovering the mythic battle that helped forge these extraordinary beings and tied them to humankind forever.”
Godzilla x Kong is the next installment in the MonsterVerse, a series of connected American films about Kaiju released over the last decade. It began with 2014’s Godzilla and 2017’s Kong: Skull Island before becoming a more connected series. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in 2019 and was followed up by Godzilla vs. Kong, which became a smash success despite a simultaneous streaming and theater release due to a COVID resurgence. Apple TV recently released a television show called Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which explores the organization Monarch, one of the essential crossover components of the MonsterVerse. The MonsterVerse is separate from the recently released Godzilla Minus One, which has been a critical and commercial success and has enjoyed an extended stay in US theaters.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire releases on March 29, 2024. It stars returning actors Brian Tyree Henry and Rebecca Hall, with Monsterverse newcomers Dan Stevens and Fala Chen joining the fray.
