Kate, the high-intensity action film directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, released its first trailer today, Rolling Stone reports. The film is set to debut on September 10 in select theaters and on Netflix.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars in Kate, and she is also well known for her role as Huntress in Birds of Prey. Winstead was ruthless alongside Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn and now she’s returned with a John Wick fighting style in Kate.
As Rolling Stone describes, the film centers on an assassin named Kate who discovers she’s been poisoned by a Yakuza organization after blowing an assignment in Tokyo. She has less than 24 hours to retaliate against her killers before her body deteriorates for good. Kate thus forms an unlikely bond with the teenage daughter of one of her past victims.
The cast for the film also includes Tadanobu Asano, Miyavi, Michiel Huisman, Miku Martineau, Jun Kunimura, and Woody Harrelson.
Winstead reportedly did all of her own stunts for Kate and director Nicolas-Troyan wanted to highlight the “visceral and extremely raw aspect” of her action performances. He describes the film as a “love letter” to Japan as well.
“The movie is stuffed with Japanese cultural references,” he explains to Rolling Stone. “The Lawson convenience stores, the vending machines, the pop culture (with the classic Galactic Wars TV show largely inspired by Star Wars), the anime manga culture (with Tokyo Ghoul) and the music,” he explains. “All the needle drops in the film are there to celebrate Japanese female artists of all genres: metal, pop, ballad, hip-hop, and just plain weird.”
Be sure to watch the trailer below and check out Kate when it releases in select theaters and on Netflix on September 10th!
