Disney’s Tron franchise finally got a third film in the ongoing series after 15 years since the last installment. But it may be even longer before another Tron movie is even discussed at Disney, as new reports indicate the movie is hemorrhaging money faster than it can make it.
Tron: Ares finds the programming going off the grid and hopping into the real world. A sentient software is sent into the real world as a controllable super soldier dubbed Ares. But when given a highly sensitive mission, Ares begins to grapple with his own intelligence, while questioning what it makes to exist at all.
Tron: Ares has had a rough time hitting the big screen overall, even looking past its stint at the box office. It faced an uphill battle when it came to getting off the ground, as Screenrant notes, leading to a very disappointing domestic opening of $33 million, per BoxOfficeMojo. Even worse, the film is looking to lose a whopping total around $132.7 million, assuming it makes $160 million worldwide.
Deadline, who initially reported about Ares’ financial struggles, also reported that the $170 million budget that was released at first is much lower than what the final production cost sits at. The reported final figure now is right around $220 million for the whole project.
Tron: Ares is now playing in theaters.
