One of Them Days, a new comedy from Sony Pictures starring Keke Palmer and SZA, has received positive reviews across the board. The film follows best friends Dreux (Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) who experience a truly awful day when they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend spent all their rent money. They then go to extreme and hilarious lengths to scrape together enough cash to avoid eviction.
The film currently sits at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and 92% audience score. With a modest budget of $14 million, the film just about made that back after this past weekend. Interestingly, the film beat out Blumhouse horror film Wolf Man at the domestic box office over the weekend, a film that was expected to top the charts.
One of Them Days represents a return to form for R-rated comedies in theaters, something that has become increasingly rare over the past few years. There could be a few reasons for this film’s modest success. One such reason is the lack of the genre in theaters, so fans will take what they can get. SZA and Keke Palmer are also both draws, SZA mainly due to her persona created through her music and Palmer as a rising star from films such as Nope and Hustlers. One of Them Days, directed by Lawrence Lamont, is now playing in theaters everywhere.
