It appears that the Pink Ranger is the first one to be cast as part of the the upcoming cinematic revival of the Power Rangers. Newcomer Naomi Scott joins the cast as Kimberly Hart, a.k.a. the Pink Power Ranger.
The move was announced via the Power Rangers Twitter account.
Most twenty-somthings will remember the phenomenon the TV series was when it debuted in 1993, spawning a feature film titled Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in 1995. The popularity of the series eventually wained with multiple rebrandings, but the series is still airing on the kid’s television network, Nickelodeon with the most recent spawn being Power Rangers Dino Charge.
Lionsgate and Saban Brands joined forces last year to reboot the franchise and bring a live action film to the twenty-first century. Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, both of whom wrote the scripts for X-Men: First Class and Thor, are penning the script for the film to be directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac). Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur are producing.
Naomi Scott is the first domino to fall in the casting process of the project as the producers are looking for fresh-faced and largely unknown actors to lead the franchise. Scott was most recently seen in the Ridley Scott film, The Martian. She was also in the Disney Channel original movie, Lemonade Mouth, back in 2011.
Power Rangers is schedule to be released January 13, 2017.
