New Photos From ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Released Ahead of October Premier

We’ve already seen quite a few photos of Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as Shakespeare’s most famous forbidden lovers, but today we got a number of new photos that show off the stars, director Carlo Carlei, and the supporting cast that includes Homeland‘s Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Win Win), and more:

Above is Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, apparently in the middle of a disagreement with Tybalt, played by Ed Westwick (aka Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl). On the right is Natascha McElhone, best known as Karen in Californication. The Lord and Lady Capulet are Juliet’s parents.

Tybalt again, presumably facing off with one of the hated Montegues. Tybalt is one of the characters who most vigorously stirs the proverbial pot. It’s possible this comes from the scene after the masquerade ball where Romeo and Juliet first meet (see below), when Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel.

Steinfeld came virtually out of nowhere to star as Mattie Ross in the Coen Brothers’ True Grit remake, where she quite capably shared the screen with heavyweights Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges. The sixteen-year-old actress has already parlayed that Oscar-nominated role into parts in Ender’s Game, the highly sought after Can a Song Save Your Life?, and the Kristen Wiig-starrer Hateship Loveship, among others.

Here’s Juliet again, preparing for the masquerade. She probably looks a bit miffed because her parents are trying to persuade her to accept the courtship of a young count named Paris. The ball is intended as an opportunity for Juliet to get to know Paris.

Paul Giamatti stands to the right of the young lovers as Friar Laurence, the man who gives Juliet the concoction that makes her appear dead so she can run away with Romeo. Famously, it works too well, fooling her lover as much as her family.

Carlei’s latest adaptation of the famous tale hits theaters in limited release in the U.S. on October 11. A wide release date has not yet been announced.
