New Monsterverse Film Will Not Have Adam Wingard As Director

Following confirmation of a follow-up to the recent entry in the Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, it has been confirmed that Adam Wingard will not return to helm the project. Wingard served as director for the last two Monsterverse films.

Hollywood Reporter pointed out that while Wingard directing another Monsterverse feature was never set in stone, he does have an action movie currently in the works. Dubbed Onslaught, the film was secured recently by A24.

During Wingard’s stint at the Monsterverse, he directed Godzilla Vs. Kong, the long-awaited rematch of the two monsters who first duked it out in Ishirō Honda’s 1962 King Kong Vs. Godzilla.

With the success of Godzilla Vs. Kong, especially for a movie coming after the pandemic, a sequel was greenlit and helmed again by Wingard.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which saw the duo team up to take down a threat bigger than both, became the highest-grossing film of the Monsterverse.

Despite his departure to bring Onslaught to the big screen, Hollywood Reporter noted that Wingard did leave the Monsterverse on good terms, leaving the door open for him to return to Godzilla and Kong.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is available to rent or own on digital.
