Warner Bros. took to WonderCon in Anaheim this past Saturday to show off new footage from their upcoming blockbusters Mad Max: Fury Road and San Andreas. The San Andreas presentation was followed by panel discussion with director Brad Peyton, as well as co-stars Carla Gugino (Sin City), Paul Giamatti (Straight Outta Compton), and Alexandra Daddario (HBO’s True Detective).
The San Andreas footage mostly showed off the destruction of downtown Los Angeles caused by the earthquake. The footage reportedly had a greater effect on the crowd due to a large portion of it being done with practical effects as opposed to a green screen or other CGI manipulations. Peyton said this came as a bit of a shock to Giamatti, who asked him when he arrived on set, “Where are all the green screens?” The actors performed most of their own stunts as well, with Gugino claiming that she did more stunts on San Andreas than on any other movie in her career.
Director George Miller and the rest of the cast of Mad Max: Fury Road didn’t make an appearance at the convention, but Warner Bros. made up for it with a lot of footage. Among that footage was a scene where Max (Hardy) and Imperator Furiosa (Theron) fight upon first meeting each other. The fight was reportedly brutal, taking place in the middle of the arid dessert. There was also a trailer showing off Nux’s (Nicholas Hoult) role in the epic car chase that makes up the biggest set-piece of the film.
Mad Max: Fury Road will be released May 15 and will be accompanied by the next trailer for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. San Andreas will see a release on May 29.
