This week, the Directors Guild of Canada BC has reached new understanding regarding issues they had with the Canadian Media Producers Organization and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
The grievances that pulled for action were cited as multiple different kinds of wage issues such as new rates as minimum wage rises and payment in correlation to COVID testing. The new settlement reached, though not yet officiated, will address all of the issues voiced by the guild. Hopefully the new contract will be enacted soon, but at this moment it is still in the drafting process as the “language of the memorandum of the agreement” is finalized, as reported by the Directors Guild in a statement they released.
In April, the guild was set to go on a strike, but never was able to go through with it due to labor laws in Canada. Since the almost strike, production has still be happening thanks to ‘safe harbor’ agreements, and once the new contract is finalized members will be bound to that instead.
While film is a popular industry in Canada, no other area such as Toronto were threatening to go on strike, as they have a different contract and Guild than those in British Columbia.
