On New Year’s Eve Disney released a new international trailer for its upcoming live-action reboot of their animated classic Cinderella.
Fans of the 1950 Oscar-nominated Disney production will feel right at home here. The retelling of the much-loved tale centers around Ella (Lily James from TV’s Downton Abbey), whose widowed father remarries the evil Lady Tremain (Cate Blanchett, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies). Rather than being accepted into her new family, Ella is forced by her stepmother to work as a maid and is shunned by her stepsisters. Ella’s one desire, to go to the royal ball, is magically facilitated by her Fairy Godmother, portrayed by Helena Bonham-Carter (Sweeney Todd).
Kenneth Branagh (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit) directs from a script by Chris Weitz (The Golden Compass).
Disney has had great box-office success in the live action arena in recent years, what with this year’s Maleficent and 2010’s Alice in Wonderland. The studio’s recent release of the live-action version of Stephen Sondheim’s Into The Woods will certainly only add to that and increase anticipation for Cinderella, which is scheduled for a March 2015 release in the US.
