Following an excerpt at the Super Bowl, Universal Pictures has now released a full trailer for the live-action How To Train Your Dragon, which will be in theaters on June 13th. With so many live-action adaptations becoming a trend lately, audiences may be wondering what this remake will bring to the table. Writer and director Dean DeBlois hopes to create a faithful, yet fresh reimagining. The trailer opens with shots of the new live-action dragons as well as the protagonist Hiccup. It covers many beats from the original film, such as the first time Hiccup meets the dragon Toothless and the process of befriending him. It continues with voice-overs from different characters, including Hiccup, Chief Stoick, and Astrid. The tensions between dragons and Vikings rise, and then a shot of the dragon queen can be seen.
How To Train Your Dragon stars Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. Other cast members include Gerard Butler, Nick Frost, and Julian Dennison. DeBlois has said that he plans to spend more time developing the characters to create a richer story.
While the prospect of a new How To Train Your Dragon film is exciting, seeing a trailer with all of the same story beats, sometimes shot for shot, can be concerning. We can only hope that DeBlois maintains his plans to keep the story fresh and is saving the new stuff for the film itself.
